How to Obtain a Marriage License in Missouri
Before you say “I do,” at any St. Louis wedding venue, there’s one important legal step couples must take —obtaining a marriage license. Before your grand celebration at Berkshire Ridge Wedding Venue, you must secure getting your marriage license to make your marriage official in Missouri. The process is simple but requires attention to a few key details. In Berkshire’s blog, we will help you with everything you need to know to get your marriage license stress-free and on time.
Step 1: Eligibility Requirements
Age: Both applicants must be at least 18 years old. If either applicant is 16 or 17, they must have parental consent. Applicants under 16 are not permitted to marry in Missouri.
Relationship: Applicants cannot be closely related by blood, including first cousins.
Marital Status: Both individuals must be unmarried at the time of application.
Step 2: Necessary Documentation
When applying, both parties should present:
Valid Identification: Such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport.
Social Security Number: Applicants should be prepared to provide their Social Security numbers.
Previous Marriages: If applicable, provide the date the previous marriage ended
Step 3: Apply for the Marriage License
In-Person Application: Both applicants must appear together at the Recorder of Deeds office in any Missouri county.
Online Application: Some counties offer an online application to expedite the process, but both parties still need to appear in person to finalize the application
Step 4: Pay the Application Fee
Fee Amount: The marriage license fee varies by county, typically ranging from $48 to $60.
Payment Methods: Accepted payment methods vary; some counties accept cash, credit/debit cards, or money orders. It's advisable to check with the specific county office for accepted forms of payment.
Step 5: Understand License Validity
Validity Period: The marriage license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
Location of Ceremony: The marriage must be solemnized within the state of Missouri.
Step 6: Conduct the Marriage Ceremony
Authorized Officiants: Marriages may be solemnized by any clergyman in good standing with any church or synagogue in Missouri, or by any judge, including municipal judges .
Witnesses: Two witnesses must be present at the ceremony and then sign the marriage license- this is typically the maid of honor and best man.
Step 7: Return the Completed License
Filing: The officiant is responsible for returning the completed marriage license to the Recorder of Deeds office within 15 days after the ceremony.
Certified Copies: After the license is recorded, you can request certified copies for name changes and other legal purposes.
For specific details or to begin the application process, contact the Recorder of Deeds office in the county where you plan to apply. Each county may have slightly different procedures or requirements. You may use any county in Missouri when applying for the marriage license. You do not have to live in that county to apply and get a marriage license.
